I like the photo, but what is the story behind it?
ReplyDeleteThe photo was taken in December 2009 in Blount County, East Tennessee, which serves as one of the gateway points into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A Drifter Media staff photographer was driving around some backroads, just checking things out when they happened upon this "household," which is not an uncommon scene, unfortunately, in that particular area. What initially caught the eye of the photographer was the Dixie/Confederate flag. Drifter Media intends to release a series of photos that feature the Dixie flag in all of them, along with deep Appalachian poverty. The two seem to go hand in hand. Drifter Media is interested in some Americans' fascination and sometimes disturbing loyalty to a symbol that most often represents racism to those who look upon it.

ReplyDeleteDrifter Media does not apologize for the caption. The photo was "pirated" -- no permission was asked when the photo was taken. So without having spoken to the individual who lives in the squalor pictured and without knowing, for a fact, that the person harbors racist views, Drifter Media feels it is irresponsible to call the flag's presence flatly "racist."
ReplyDeleteThe rebel flag is not considered racist in this area..If any of you actually spent any time around here you would see african american males driving around lifted 4x4 trucks with rebel flags waving from the bed.. It's a southern trend here..not racism. But racism paints a more interesting story right? So let's just assume these people are white and hate blacks..Although in all reality they might be blacks who hate whites...but wait, it's not racism anymore if that's the case. Right?
